What I wish every newly-diagnosed scoli knew

 

You can't stretch your way out of scoliosis. I know, I tried, for years. Yoga is wonderful, and I'm a 200-hour-trained yoga teacher who teaches it daily, but generic yoga doesn't address rotation, and rotation is what makes a curve a curve. You need scoliosis-specific movement. There's a difference.

 

Strength alone won't save you either. I was a personal trainer deep in the bodybuilding world before I figured this out. Lifting heavy made me strong but lopsided. The fix isn't more weight; it's better cues, scoliosis-aware programming, and learning how your specific curve wants to move.


Your spine isn't a flaw, it's just yours. This is the mental piece nobody talks about. Half the work of living well with scoliosis happens between your ears. The day I stopped fighting my spine and started working with it, everything changed.

I have a severe three-curve scoliosis. I was diagnosed at 13, hid it for years, watched it get worse, and broke down in 2019 after a back injury that left me unable to get out of bed. That was the year I stopped fighting my spine and started learning to work with it.

Today: still 50+ degrees, still three curves, still very wonky. But, barely any pain, stable curves, and I ski, hike, lift and live a life I genuinely love. No surgery. Not planning to.

I'm a personal trainer, yoga teacher (200hr Vinyasa, India) and Yoga for Scoliosis certified.  I have trained with some of the best Schroth therapists in the world. I co-host scoliosis retreats with Martha Carter (Twisted Outreach Project). I read the new research as it drops. I am, by any reasonable measure, a giant scoliosis nerd. Happily.

This is the one week of the year I bring my work into a single, beautiful place. And yeah, that place happens to be a beach in Mexico. Seven days of scoliosis-specific classes, real teaching, real community, and a pace of life that feels like an exhale.
